When it rains and you go up or down them, you can slip. My husband and I put it on the edge of the steps and it stops the slipping greatly. And it doesn't look bad either. Also, when I walk barefoot or with just socks on the steps, it doesn't hurt and it doesn't mess up my socks. Good product.
